For small to mid size business it can be difficult to keep track of whats happening on your network.  There are plenty of solutions out there but they can be expensive and difficult to configure and support.  Spiceworks is a free browser-based network management and administration program. It provides the user with a single dashboard from which he or she can inventory, monitor and troubleshoot the network and even track Helpdesk calls.

Spiceworks is very simple to install and you only have to provide minimal information before its up and running and scanning your network.  You will be surprised how quickly you are receiving alerts about systems on your network even items like low toners in printers.  There can be some issues with authorisations but then you will discover the support forum where other users have probably come across your problem  before.

Spice works also links equipment back to the manufacturers website for drivers etc., and it will keep track of your anti-virus.  Spiceworks has an enormous amount of features for absolutely nothing. Having your inventory on one page and being able to easily see network events in real time is fantastic.

Spiceworks is add supported which may surprise you when you first log in, but they really do not interfere with the product in any way.  It is a small price to pay for such an excellent free product.
